However, there were still difficulties. My engine kept stalling when the trail got steep, leaving me in a dangerous position from time to time. The dream of fuel injectors danced in my head. Alas in the summer of 1998 the original straight six had had enough. Not wanting to spend the money for a small block Chevy, I purchased a Jasper built 258 I-6. In conjunction with my new motor, Howell fuel injection was installed. | |

Soon after the engine swap, I added a Ramsey Winch and various other things. Finally in the summer of 1999 the Dana 300 was in need of a rebuild. In addition to a complete rebuild, a Tera-Low 4:1 gear set was dropped in including a cryogenically hardened output shaft. |
| Plans for the future include stepping up to 15X10 aluminum
wheels with beadlocks in order to hold 35X14.50 Super Swamper SSr's. These additions will likely find the weaknesses in the
Dana 30 front axle. Thus, a swap to a Dana 44 will probably be in my future. Nothing wild
and crazy is in the future, I like having just the basic Jeep. This vehicle is currently a
daily driver. I have driven it to Moab, Utah twice for spring break, wheeled for a week,
and driven it back. I don't have a vehicle to tow the Jeep with yet, so I have to make do.
However, now that I am out of college, a job and a tow vehicle-daily driver are in my
future. Then the fun will really begin. -Ryan Sigworth (ryansig@hotmail.com) |
